Livestock diversity or animal genetic resources are terms used to describe the pool of 38 species of domesticated birds and mammals with more than 8 800 breeds currently used for food and agriculture. This infographic shows how livestock diversity can help us to adapt to a hotter and harsher world and make us more resilient to the hazards posed by climate change such as drought, floods and disease.

The changing climate will continue to put pressure on agricultural ecosystems, particularly in regions and for populations that are particularly vulnerable. Introducing pulses into crop production can be key to increasing resilience to climate change.

Agriculture sectors’ mitigation potential is recognized by 86% countries in their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs). Agriculture's climate change mitigation potential needs to be unlocked to address the emission gap and keep the temperature increase below 2°C limit. Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) provide a mechanism for supporting countries to implement their INDC and achieve a number of SDGs by enhancing agricultural productivity, supporting food security and rural development while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This infographic describes the importance of agriculture sectors in national adaptation processes to help ensure food and nutrition security.

Changing climatic conditions, such as more frequent and extreme weather events, will negatively affect the livelihoods of rural people, and food and nutrition security. In their submissions to the UN climate convention, a large proportion of the developed countries referred to agriculture sectors as a priority for climate change adaptation. FAO supports countries in building an enabling environment and developing capacity at different levels, allowing countries to sustainably transform their agriculture sectors and natural resource management.
