This brief was produced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as part of the project "Climate-Smart Agriculture: capturing the synergies between mitigation, adaptation and food security" implemented within the Economics and Policy Innovations for Climate-Smart Agriculture (EPIC) Programme of the Agricultural Development Economics Division (ESA).

The project, funded by the European Commission, was launched in January 2012 in Malawi, Viet Nam and Zambia.

This report discusses knowledge on anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) activities made available through the new FAOSTAT Emission database. The analysis shows increases in emissions of agriculture, decreases in deforestation rates and decreases in forest sinks.

This Manual seeks to guide the staff of national statistical offices and environmental ministries and agencies in compiling statistics related to GHG emissions and removals. In particular, the Manual provides information on accessing and using the FAOSTAT Emissions database. In addition, the ma nual sets out a step-by-step approach on estimating GHG emissions with the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National GHG Emission Inventories. The FAOSTAT Emissions database provides Member Countries with the opportunity to identify the official agricultural and forestry statistics (data gap filling) required for GHG emission estimations, and to perform GHG data analysis linked to data gap filling and Quality Assurance/Quality Control processes

During El Niño episodes the normal patterns of tropical precipitation and atmospheric circulation become disrupted triggering extreme climate events around the globe: droughts, floods and affecting the intensity and frequency of hurricanes. Disasters create poverty traps that increase the prevalence of food insecurity and malnutrition. Agriculture is one of the main sectors of the economy that could be severely affected by El Niño event. FAO monitors the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, among other weather related hazards, with a special focus on the potential impacts on the agricultural sector. The objective of this study is to enhance our understanding the El Niño phenomenon using FAO’s Agricultural Stress Index System (ASIS). This study is carried out under the auspices of the new FAO Strategic Framework, for the Strategic Objective 5 “Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises”. The study outcomes are expected to enhance further discussions on our understanding of the El Niño Phenomenon and add to the growing literature. This would in turn improve effective early warning capabilities of FAO and partners to issue and trigger timely disaster risk reduction measures

The publication reports on the concepts driving the scientific activities of the MICCA’s pilot projects in East Africa. It provides the research results, describes the analytical approaches used and concludes with key messages relevant to discussions on Climate-Smart Agriculture. In partnership with the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the East Africa Dairy Development Project (EADD) and Care International, the MICCA pilot projects mainstream Climate-Smart Agriculture in the regions by identifying, verifying and scaling up farm management practices.
