This Gender in Climate-Smart Agriculture module was pre-pared jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Bank. The coordination team con-sisted of Sanna-Liisa Taivalmaa (World Bank), Ilaria Fir-mian (IFAD), and Kaisa Karttunen (FAO), with technical support from Christine Heumesser, Eija Pehu, and Ademola Braimoh from the World Bank; Clare Bishop-Sambrook from IFAD; and Ilaria Sisto and Szilvia Lehel from FAO. Patti Kristjanson (consultant) offered valuable guidance for the entire module in addition to writing two Thematic Notes and one Innovative Activity Profile.

Genetic resources for food and agriculture underpin the ability of crops, livestock, aquatic organisms and forest trees to withstand a range of harsh conditions and climate change poses new challenges. At the request of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, FAO prepared thematic studies on the interactions between climate change and plant, animal, forest, aquatic, invertebrate and micro-organism genetic resources. This publication summarizes the results of these studies.

This booklet provides an overview of the characteristics and main activities of the projects that are being implemented as part of the second project portfolio of the Benefit-sharing Fund (BSF) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. This second portfolio consists of 22 projects that are currently implemented in 33 countries across Africa, Asia, Near East, Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim of this booklet is to give a general overview of the second project portfolio, as well as to share achievements, best practices and lessons learned during its mid-term phase of implementation.

The 2011 FAO assessment of global food losses and waste estimated that each year, one-third of all food produced in the world for human consumption never reached the consumer’s table. This not only means a missed opportunity for the economy and food security, but also a waste of all the natural resources used for growing, processing, packaging, transporting and marketing food. Through an extensive literature search, the 2011 assessment of food wastage volumes gathered weight ratios of food losses and waste for different regions of the world, different commodity groups and different steps of the supply chain. These ratios were applied to regional food mass flows of FAO’s Food Balance Sheets for the year 2007. Food wastage arises at all stages of the food supply chains for a variety of reasons that are very much dependent on the local conditions within each country. At a global level, a pattern is clearly visible; in high income regions, volumes of wasted food are higher in the processing, distribution and consumption stages, whereas in low-income countries, food losses occur in the production and postharvesting phases.

This study assesses the impact of medium to large scale natural hazards and disasters  on  the agriculture sector and subsectors in developing countries between 2003 and 2013, focusing on direct physical damage and indirect economic losses. The findings of the study are expected to support national and international efforts to reduce damage and losses caused by disasters and strengthen the resilience of the agriculture sector, in line with resilience targets set under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Universal Climate Change Agreement.
