Activity A.2, Priority Area A: Capacity Building, Knowledge Sharing and Communication (Mandated by Decision 3/CP.23) complements the above submission on gender and provides examples of FAO’s gender-sensitive and participatory education, training, public-awareness and public participation activities in climate change mitigation and adaptation undertaken between 1 January 2017 and 31 January 2018.

In this submission FAO welcomes the progress made by UNFCCC in response to the Decision 1/CP.COP21 Paragraph 136 which highlights the need to strengthen knowledge, technologies, practices and efforts of local communities and indigenous people related to addressing and responding to climate change. FAO highly encourages the involvement of local communities and indigenous peoples in the policy discussions that affect their lives. FAO recognizes the need to strengthen knowledge, technologies, practices and efforts of local communities and indigenous peoples related to addressing and responding to climate change, and welcomes all necessary efforts to establish a platform for the exchange of experiences and sharing of best practices on mitigation and adaptation in a holistic and integrated manner.

FAO recognises the success of the 4th in-session dialogue on Article 6 of the Convention “Action for Climate Empowerment” (ACE) in stimulating discussions, sharing good practices and lessons learned. Considering the success of the 4th dialogue, FAO welcomes the organization of the 5th Dialogue on ACE and in this submission has provided suggestions on issues that could be considered when developing the agenda in this submission.

In this submission FAO presents its views to the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) on opportunities to enhance the effective engagement of non-Party stakeholders with a view to strengthening the implementation of the provisions of decision 1/CP.21, as well as the organization of the workshop on this topic at SBI46. Effective engagement of non-Party stakeholders will be essential to mobilize the collective action needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Framework Convention. FAO would like to emphasize the importance of engaging all "Major Groups".

In this submission FAO shares its views on possible matters to be addressed at an in-session workshop during the forty-sixth session of the Subsidiary Bodies to develop elements of the gender action plan under the Lima Work Programme on Gender (LWPG).
