Strengthening capacities for disaster preparedness and climate risk management in the Nepalese agricultural sector

Since April of 2008, FAO along with other local partners have been assisting the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MoAC) in testing and operationalizing the shift from a reactive emergency response  approach towards a pro-active natural hazard risk prevention/preparedness approach in the agricultural sector.

The collaboration is also helping local authorities to increase awareness and resilience needed to address increasing climate variability and change through prioritised climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness practices.

The expected outcomes of the project include:

  • Enhanced technical capacity within DoA for Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Agriculture
  • Strengthened basic support services for Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) in Agriculture sector in two selected pilot districts
  • Demonstration of location specific technologies for Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM) within the agriculture sector through a participatory learning by doing process at district and community level
  • Economic impact analysis of adaptation interventions, lessons learned and policy implications

FAO partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MoAC), Department of Agriculture (DoA), Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and several other agencies .
