The workshop was organized in partnership with the Northern Mountainous Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (NOMAFSI), and brought together Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) departments and Vietnam Farmers’ Union, Viet Nam Academy of Agricultural Sciences as well as other national stakeholders working in the field of sustainable agriculture as well as international institutions, research agencies, donors and civil society organizations. The project activities are taking place in Dien Bien, Son La and Yen Bai and their representatives were also present.
The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) project and review the country activities with key stakeholders, in order to adapt to the national context. Participants shared experiences and discussed issues related to sustainable agriculture in the Northern Mountainous region. The inception workshop addressed the following questions:
• What are the major opportunities for promoting CSA? What are the agricultural practices contributing to increased productivity/incomes for food security and agricultural development as well as increased adaptive capacity and, where possible, mitigation?
• What are the barriers to adoption of CSA and which policies are needed to overcome them?
• What are the priority needs for capacity building to achieve CSA implementation for policy-makers, researchers?
• What are the enabling mechanisms (policy, institutional, financing) and tools (baseline, models, methodologies) required?
