Actions needed to halt deforestation and promote climate-smart agriculture

Integrated action across Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) and agriculture is necessary to achieve mitigation and food security outcomes. ‘Climate-smart’ agriculture that achieves the triple-win of food security, adaptation and mitigation will strengthen the impacts of REDD+; REDD+ must address the needs of smallholder farmers to avoid exacerbating poverty and local food insecurity. This session presents successful climate-smart agricultural practices and discusses innovative ways to combine incentives to agriculture with the strengthening of forest governance through REDD+.

Climate Services for Adaptation

This side event is organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in partnership with Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the FAO and Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). It will provide information on the "Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS)" established by the World Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3). GFCS guides the development of climate services that link science-based climate predictions and information with climate-risk management and adaptation to climate variability and change throughout the world.

Climate-Smart Agriculture for Food Security

Tackling the food security problem in an era of climate change calls for transition to a new paradigm of climate-smart agriculture: addressing together the three challenges of climate change adaptation, mitigation and food security. Organized by the FAO and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), this side event will look at key examples of concrete country needs and good practices in climate-smart agriculture with potential for up-scaling.
