Product highlights - Egypt

Egypt is a big market for agricultural products, fruits and vegetables because it is endowed with the Nile River, fertile land and mild weather. Moreover, Egyptian crops are grown and monitored by the latest international regulations and European Standards.

Geographical Indication (GI) products

In March 2020, olive oil, Barrany Grapes (grapes from the Barrany area) and figs are the FIRST Egyptian products from Matrouh Governorate that have been registered as GI products.

Egypt is the world’s second largest producer of table olives and produced around 450,000 tons in 2018/19 of which around 100,000 tons were exported. Grapes’ exports recorded $213 million, topping the list of the top 20 foodstuffs of the Egyptian non-petroleum exports during June 2018. Now that Barrany grapes have a GI, there is potential to have it included in the export grapes variety. Egypt is also the world’s second largest producer of figs, 189,339 tons in 2018.
