The fish wealth in Egypt is one of the most important sources of national income, as well as a source of safe protein that provides food needs internally and develops other industries alongside. Fisheries in Egypt occupy vast areas of more than 13 million acres, equivalent to approximately 150% of their agricultural land, and these sources vary according to their nature, including the seas, such as the Red and Mediterranean Seas, including lakes such as Manzala, Burullus, Bardawil, Edku, Qarun and Mariout, and the navigation in Port Fouad, which also includes fresh water sources from the Nile River with its two branches, canals and drains. In addition to the the previous natural sources were, there are other man-made artificial sources such as Lake Nasser and Lake Rayyan, Moreover, there are fish farms located in various parts of Egypt. Egypt's production of fish has increased to 1.8 million tons annually (80 percent of which come from fish farming). Egypt has been ranked first in Africa and eighth in the world in fish farming sector.
