A Thai proverb that says, 'There are fish in the water and rice in the fields,” well describes the fertility of the land and the strong bond that Thai people have to agriculture. The kingdom has long held the title as the ‘rice basket of Southeast Asia.’ In the mountainous north, the slash-and-burn cultivation has been shifted to coffee plantations. The southern wetlands have provided local communities with the dynamic ecosystem and agrobiodiversity. As the policy on organic production continues, these factors will drive forward the country’s sustainable development initiatives, agricultural-based economy and innovation.
