Günter Hemrich, FAO (ESAF)
Food Systems Economist, has worked on food security issues since 1992 for FAO, the German Technical Co-operation (GTZ), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the German Foundation for International Development (DSE). Recent articles include "Addressing the risk factor common to conflict and food insecurity" (State of Food and Agriculture (SOFI) 2002) and "Food insecurity and HIV/AIDS: when short-term emergencies intersect a long-wave crisis" (SOFI 2003).

Fatima Jibrell, Horn Relief
Somali environmental, pastoralists' and women's rights activist, winner of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2002 and founder of the Horn of Africa Relief and Development Organization (http://hornrelief.org/index.html). A child of nomads, Jibrell eventually became an American citizen. She recently achieved a major victory by securing an enforced ban on the export of charcoal from the Puntland government in northeast Somalia. While halting the "charcoal wars," Jibrell and Horn Relief have educated rural local communities on sustainable alternatives to charcoal production and helped them work together in peace.

Anne Joseph, EC AidCo
Dr Anne Joseph has worked on the banking and financial sectors in African countries and is the author of one book and several articles on the subject. She has been working on poverty and food security at the European Commission since 2000. Previously based in Madagascar, she works in the Food Security Unit of EuropeAid Co-operation Office at the EC Headquarters in Brussels.

Chief, Food Security, Safety Nets and Relief Service, WFP Strategy, Policy and Programme Support Division. Manages and directs WFP policy development and programme support activities, including research in four areas (each of which has its own unit chief): Gender, Emergency Relief and Recovery, HIV/AIDS and General Food Security Policy.
