Access to and control of resources by women: a challenge for food security. Recommendations

In the past decade, the theme of food security has received more and more attention, and strategies to meet this challenge have been developed. The process of the empowerment of women thus logically forms part of the road to the solution, at both the individual and organisational level, by taking into account four components: ASSETS (economic power) – KNOWLEDGE AND KNOW-HOW (power to) – WILL (internal power) – CAPACITY (social and political power). This is why the Commission on Women and Development recommends that actors at all levels give these four components priority in their development policies.

Guidance note - Gender-based violence and livelihood interventions : Focus on populations of humanitarian concern in the context of HIV and AIDS

This Guidance Note provides an overview of the complex interactions between GBV, HIV and AIDS and rural livelihoods, based on the available literature and findings from FAO field studies in Kenya and Uganda. The studies, conducted in humanitarian settings, focused mainly on the relationships between these issues, and on identifying the appropriate livelihood strategies to mitigate and prevent GBV, and strengthen people’s resilience.
It also gives information on how to make livelihood interventions in the agricultural sector relevant to the realities of GBV and commercial sex, and thus enhance the effectiveness of the programmatic response to both food and livelihoods insecurity and GBV, in the context of humanitarian crises and HIV.

Tackling legal empowerment: the Farmer Life School approach. Workshop report

Because of its participatory and community-based methodologies and its focus on empowerment, self reliance and gender equality, the FAO’s Farmer Life School (FLS) approach is increasingly seen as a good platform for delivering gender and legal empowerment messages within the rural context. The first experience of using this approach for raising awareness of farmers on legal issues and strengthening their capacity to use law and legal services has been experimented in Kenya, at the Coastal Province. The Farmer Field School-Reproductive Health (FFS-RH) project implemented in four coastal districts, in collaboration with the Association of Women’s Lawyers (FIDA Kenya), have successfully integrated a number of legal issues in their participatory trainings. These issues include reproductive rights, gender-based violence, property rights and children’s rights. In this context, FAO held a workshop on “Tacking legal empowerment: a Farmer Life School approach” in Nairobi, Kenya, from 3 to 4 March 2009.
Dimitra Guidebooks
In March 2000, Dimitra published a guidebook on European organisations (NGOs, information centres and research institutes) working with/for rural women in the South. This guidebook was available in English, French and Dutch, but is now out of print.
