Prizes for rural women 2009 - Call for Nominations
The Women’s World Summit Foundation (WWSF) invites you to submit nominations for its 16th annual edition of the prize for women’s creativity in rural life, honouring creative and courageous women and women’s organisations working to improve the quality of life in rural communities around the world.
Since inception of the prize program in 1994, 344 Laureates have been honoured for their creativity (as of 2009 US$1000 per laureate and US$3000 for established organisations in Africa).
All laureates and their profiles are published on the WWSF website. A travelling exposition and a global poster is giving visibility to all the prize winners.
Given your experience, interest and perspective with regard to issues of development, human rights, micro-credit, peace building and empowerment of women, WWSF greatly appreciate your participation and thank you in advance for sending your candidates. Prize winners will be selected from complete nominations that include all the required documents mentioned in the attached nomination guidelines. Incomplete nominations will not be considered.

SVRI Forum 2009: Coordinated evidence-based responses to end sexual violence
6-9 July 2009 - Johannesburg, South Africa
The conference is aimed at promoting research on sexual violence, highlighting innovation and encouraging sharing and networking in the area of sexual violence. The event will bring together over 200 participants working on sexual violence as researchers, gender activists, funders, policy makers, service providers, survivors and others.
The conference is organised by the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI). The SVRI is a global initiative that promotes and disseminates policy relevant, action-orientated research to reduce and respond to sexual violence through: identifying gaps; building capacity; supporting research; raising awareness; and building partnerships. We are building an experienced and committed network of researchers, policy makers, activists and donors to ensure that the many aspects of sexual violence are addressed from different disciplinary and cultural perspectives.

AMARC AFRICA’S Fourth Pan African Conference
27-30 April 2009 - Ivory Coast
Every four years AMARC Africa organises a Pan-African conference for its members and community radio stakeholders to discuss the challenges of community radio in Africa. It is during the Pan-African conferences that AMARC Africa members elect the Board of Directors as well as decide on the strategic plan for action for the following four years.
AMARC Africa members number over 364, and are based in all sub-regions of the continent. AMARC-Africa is the African regional section of AMARC grouping together radios from all the sub-regions of the continent. The main global impact of AMARC since its creation in 1983, has been to accompany and support the establishment of an African and world wide community radio sector that has democratized the media sector. AMARC Africa advocates for the right to communicate at the international, national, local and neighbourhood levels and defends and promotes the interests of the community radio movement through solidarity, networking and Cooperation.
International Colloquium on Women's Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace and Security
7-8 March 2009 - Monrovia, Liberia
Coinciding with International Women's Day (March 8), women leaders from around the world will convene for the International Colloquium for Women’s Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace and Security at the SKD Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa. The Colloquium, conceptualized in 2006 during the inauguration of Africa’s first female President, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, will bring together 400 international participants and 400 Liberian national participants, including female leaders; heads of state and government; ministers; CEOs, presidents and executive directors; and NGO and community leaders. The Conference, co-convened by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and President Tarja Halonen of Finland, seeks to create an environment for women and their champions around the world to discuss, learn, demonstrate and act on the benefits and lessons learned from women in leadership.
