Diaz Granados: "Cooperation with FAO allows us to bring practical and efficient solutions to the territories"

FAO Director-General with Colombia’s Vice Minister for Rural Development at FAO today

29 November 2017, Rome – Colombia’s Vice Minister for Rural Development, Juan Pablo Díaz Granados, today thanked FAO for its support in the implementation of the country’s Peace Accords and rural reform programmes.

"It is a very tight and fluid cooperation that allows us to go to the territories to bring practical and efficient solutions hand-in-hand with FAO, with its technical assistance and its experience," said the Deputy Minister in remarks following a meeting with FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva.

FAO is one of the international bodies - with the European Union, UNDP and Vía Campesina - designated to accompany the country in the implementation of the first article of the Peace Agreement, which focuses on a comprehensive rural reform to overhaul the Colombian countryside.

Importance of promoting family farming

FAO’s Director-General stressed the need to promote the approval of the Family Agriculture Law in the country. He cited the examples of Mexico and Brazil and recommended the development, within the framework of the Ministry of Agriculture, of a government procurement program for agricultural surpluses from family farming.
