Benin to halve the number of hungry

Country launching food security programme in October

16 June 2013, Rome, Italy - Benin President Yayi Boni met with FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today and told him his nation will launch a food security programme next October aimed at halving the number of hungry people in the country.

Benin has already achieved the first Millennium Development Goal of halving its percentage, as opposed to its number, of hungry people. President Boni is in Rome to receive a certificate of recognition for the achievement from FAO. A total of 38 countries are receiving similar awards.

Graziano da Silva commended Benin’s performance and congratulated President Boni on having been nominated by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) as the champion of the African Union/NEPAD Agricultural Programme.
