Talks with President of Zanzibar

Graziano da Silva highlights potential for spice production and processing

7 September 2017, Zanzibar – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today thanked Zanzibar’s President Ali Mohamed Shein for the warm welcome during his visit to the island.

After touring a spices garden and market, Graziano da Silva praised the quality and variety of spices produced in Zanzibar and highlighted the potential for adding value such as producing for the international natural medicine sector.

At the meeting at State House, he also commended the fruitful discussions on food security and agriculture held with the Minister of Agriculture, Hamad Raschid Mohamed.

The Director-General also affirmed FAO’s support for Zanzibar to enhance its engagement in ‘Blue Economy’ initiatives that aim to reap the ocean’s benefits in a more equitable and sustainable way.  

President Shein thanked the Director-General for laying the foundation stone for a marine hatchery during his visit, noting that hatchery would not only improve livelihoods but also contribute to enhanced nutrition in the future.

Both principals also discussed challenges and opportunities for youth employment in the agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors.
