Improving food security and nutrition top agenda in FAO Director-General’s talks with new CFS Chair Mario Arvelo

Graziano da Silva: Committe on World Food Security (CFS) is an invaluable tool against hunger and malnutrition.

24 October 2017, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today emphasized the importance of focusing efforts on improving food security and nutrition in talks with Mario Arvelo, the newly-elected Chair of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

Arvelo is the Permanent Representative of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations Rome-based food and agriculture agencies – FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP). With a background in law and political science, he has been a diplomat for over 20 years, and acted as chair of key global and regional (Latin America and the Caribbean) food and agriculture-related committees and partnerships.

The FAO Director-General reiterated his support for the CFS as an invaluable tool against hunger and malnutrition. 

About the CFS

The Committee on World Food Security offers an inclusive platform for all stakeholders, including governments, civil society and the private sector, to work together and develop policy recommendations and guidance on topics affecting food security and nutrition.

It has promulgated landmark guidelines on land tenure, responsible investments in agriculture and guidelines for food security and nutrition in protracted crises.
