Ensuring food safety along the food chain

Talks with Costa Rica's Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce

7 December 2017, Rome – Costa Rica’s Minister for Economy, Industry and Commerce today called on countries to support the initiative for a World Food Safety Day to signal the right for all people to have access to safe and nutritious food in sufficient quantity.

Minister Geannina Dinarte participated at an event organized by the Codex Alimentarius -a collection of standards, guidelines and codes of practice adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission- in Rome, where countries shared experiences and efforts in ensuring food safety along the food chain.

Graziano da Silva stated that food safety is not only the basis for trade but the basis for healthy lives.

He reminded the audience of the recent decision by FAO Conference to support the call for a World Food Safety Day "to raise awareness of the global threat posed by foodborne disease" and stressed the need for "governments, the food industry and individuals to do more to make food safe."

The annual World Day Food Safety Day was initially proposed in 2016 by FAO’s Conference.
