Director-General reiterates FAO support to the people of Yemen

Graziano da Silva: FAO’s focus is on saving lives through saving rural livelihoods

14 February 2018, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today reiterated the UN agency’s support for the people in conflict-ridden Yemen where FAO is focusing on the need to save lives by saving rural livelihoods.

Graziano da Silva stressed that FAO intends to continue with its work in Yemen where food security remains a priority, despite the difficulties faced.

“We (FAO) never left Yemen and we never will,” Graziano da Silva told the country’s Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Othman Hussein Faid Mujli. “You can rest assured that FAO will continue to work in Yemen. You can count on us,” he stressed. "We will continue to save lives by saving livelihoods.”

Minister Faid Mujli expressed the gratitude of the people and the government of Yemen and thanked the Director-General and FAO for providing assistance despite the “tremendous difficulties”.

FAO is working closely with the World Bank, the World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and others to increase food production, maintain and enhance livelihoods, protect public health and conduct the IPC analysis.
