FAO Director-General strengthens collaboration with Pacific Community (SPC)

Focus on gender, nutrition and climate change

12 April 2018, Nadi, Fiji – FAO strengthened its collaboration with countries in the Pacific today, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva and the Pacific Community (SPC) Deputy Director General Audrey Aumua.

The MoU between FAO and SPC provides a framework for strategic collaboration between both partners in areas of common interest in the Pacific region. FAO and SPC share common goals and objectives, recognizing the importance of coordinated implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The scope of the MOU covers five crosscutting themes: gender; governance, nutrition, data, statistics and climate change.

Within this framework, FAO and SPC have agreed on the importance of effective review of joint outcomes and have established mechanisms for consultations, monitoring and review of respective activities in the Pacific Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Sectors.

Following the formalization of the MoU, FAO and SPC agreed to develop a Strategic Partnership Plan, including the necessary mechanisms for periodic review and monitoring. Both partners are in discussions to explore potential for joint programming and resource mobilization for addressing key activities under the framework of the MoU.
