Working together with young farmers, key to end hunger

FAO Director-General meets The Netherlands’ Agriculture Minister

8 May 2018, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met The Netherlands' Minister for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Carola Schouten, for talks on joint cooperation.

“One of the most important issues is to work together with young farmers. They have the knowledge and they are the new generation that really can produce the food we need for the world,” Schouten said following the meeting. “What is also very important is cooperation across the value chain with private partners. We have to do this with private companies to bring it to another level,” she added.

Schouten also stressed the importance of cooperation with knowledge institutions to foster innovation. “It is important that farmers cooperate together, and that they also innovate. And to innovate you need the knowledge institutions.” She noted The Netherlands’ expertise in this field citing Wageningen University as an example of an institution that is “willing to share this knowledge to fight hunger.”.

Minister Schouten also noted the need to tackle food waste.
