Madrid, 4 April 2013 – FAO and the Regional Commissions of the United Nations yesterday formalized mechanisms aimed at ensuring an increasingly close and integrated approach, especially at the regional and country levels, to the UN’s goals of achieving a world free from hunger and poverty.

The official Cooperation Framework Agreement will strengthen the joint work of FAO and the Regional Commissions on all matters relating to agricultural and rural development, food and nutrition security, and sustainable management of natural resources, including land, water and forests, all of which fall squarely within the respective mandates of both institutions.

The agreement most importantly will encourage a greater sharing of knowledge and information, including lessons learned, good practices and publications, as well as improve the collection, analysis and dissemination of relevant data and statistics on agriculture, food security, land, water and forests.

The agreement establishes official focal points at the global, regional and local levels who will be responsible for managing their institutional relations. Those focal points will help to ensure that annual work planning is done in coordination, including by holding joint annual meetings, by undertaking joint events and by inviting participation and representation of their respective counterparts at events that are of mutual interest.

FAO and the Regional Commissions’ respective work have especially strong synergies in their work toward achieving Millennium Development Goal 1 of halving extreme poverty and hunger, MDG 7 of ensuring environmental sustainability as integral to sustainable development overall and toward reaching the 1996 World Food Summit goal of halving the number of undernourished worldwide.

FAO and the Regional Commissions reaffirmed their commitment to share information, knowledge and human resources where appropriate, as well as to provide joint technical expertise and advisory services at the country level.
