20 June 2013, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva confirmed his engagement with, and support for the Gabonese Republic at a meeting here with Gabon President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

Following their meeting, the President set out the broad lines of his country’s “Gabon émergent” (Emerging Gabon) development strategy  at a side-event organized in the framework of FAO’s 38th governing Conference here.

Presentation of “Gabon émergent”, which includes "Gabon bleu” (Blue Gabon) and “Gabon vert” (Green Gabon) was followed with close interest by FAO’s Departments of Fisheries and Forests. According to the Director-General, “this strategy will play a key role in cooperation between FAO and Gabon and make it possible for the Organization to better contribute to the Government’s efforts to  promote the country’s sustainable development,  food security and social inclusion.”

President Ondimba noted that Gabon has all the natural resources needed to achieve food self-sufficiency.  Improving the Gabonese people’s living standards is closely linked to economic diversification and sustainable management of the country’s natural resources, he said. But Gabon needs to overcome a series of major challenges such as increasing its agricultural production and conserving its plentiful forest and fisheries resources.

Gabon is counting on  FAO’s support and experience in order to facilitate implementation of the Gabon émergent” strategy and programmes, President Ondimba added. The Director- General assured him of FAO’s full commitment and support.
