FAO eyes EXPO 2015 on food security in meeting with Italian Prime Minister

Graziano da Silva, WFP and IFAD reps say UN-Italian collaboration on improving nutrition and sustainability vital

10 September 2013, Rome – FAO Director-General Jose’ Graziano da Silva stressed the importance of Italy’s support for international hunger-fighting efforts, including its upcoming role in hosting Expo 2015 in Milan, which will focus on food security.

During a meeting with Premier Enrico Letta, Graziano da Silva, along with representatives of the World Food Programme and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, talked about the importance of the planned EXPO, whose theme will be “Feeding the planet, energy for life.”

FAO Assistant Director-General for Forestry, Eduardo Rojas-Briales, is spearheading the United Nations’ preparations for the 2015 event, which will also highlight sustainability in food systems.

Graziano da Silva, WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, and IFAD Chief Development Strategist Carlos Seré briefed Letta on the close and growing cooperation among the countries of the South on initiatives to strengthen the long-term food security, nutrition and resilience of at-risk populations.

The Rome-based UN agencies also lauded Italian institutions as key partners in their work to improve food security and agriculture. As host country to the three agencies focused on various aspects of fighting hunger, improving nutrition, and sustainable agriculture, Italy serves as a strategic hub for world food security.

They also voiced appreciation for Italy’s support to their work in food emergency hot spots like Syria.

The UN delegation was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations Organizations in Rome, Ambassador Gianni Ghisi.
