18 September 2013, Rome, Italy – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva, met Henri Djombo, Minister of Forest Economy and Sustainable Development of the Republic of Congo, on 18 September.

Both leaders exchanged views on issues of common interest, including a proposal by Congo to improve coordination among the world’s three tropical forest basins. In this context, Graziano da Silva underlined that the issue had also been raised during his meeting last July with the Brazilian Minister of Environment, Izabella Teixeira, as well as with Indonesian authorities during his official visit to Jakarta last May. Both countries expressed their willingness to find ways to strengthen South-South cooperation on issues of common interest related to the tropical basins.

During the meeting held at FAO Headquarters, the Director-General underscored that the Organization has a broad mandate and that its position as an international forum could help dialogue in this coordination process.

The Congolese cooperation initiative with Haiti for forest plantation was also discussed as a good example of South-South cooperation between Africa and South America. In addition, the meeting highlighted the importance of the pan-African certification system for forestry products.

Graziano da Silva and Djombo also exchanged views on the preparation of the international conference on the fight against illegal hunting and the illegal trade of biodiversity products, which will take place in Brazzaville in 2014.
