7 October 2013, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met Egyptian Minister for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Ayman Farid Abu Hadid, at FAO Headquarters today.“Today I am not only welcoming the Minister of a major partner, but also a colleague and good friend of FAO”, said the Director-General referring to the minister’s past involvement with FAO.

Minister Abu Hadid briefed Graziano Da Silva on his country’s recent efforts in addressing food security challenges within the framework of the Agricultural Development Strategy 2030. In this regard, the Director General expressed his appreciation for these actions and alluded to the ongoing school feeding efforts as well as Egypt’s commitment in fighting poverty through projects focusing on family farming. The Minister explained that a current project provides groups of single mothers with a set amount of cows, aiming at a sustainable income-generation and poverty alleviation.

Egypt offered to enhance further its collaboration with African Countries, within the FAO South-South Cooperation Programme, particularly those pertaining to the use of resistant wheat varieties and irrigation technologies, while inviting FAO to collaborate further with soil improvement efforts. In its on-going efforts geared towards poverty alleviation, Egypt recently opened new information centres on food security and on the effects of climate change on agriculture. This and other initiatives, such as the opening of the central laboratory for biotechnology, as well as activities in the field of nanotechnology, could become elements of future efforts of knowledge sharing between the Organization and the country.

The recent Country Programme Framework joint statement, signed with the Minister in August, establishes information generation, sharing, and dissemination; improving productivity and efficiency in the agricultural sector; sustaining rural community development; conserving natural resources adapting to impacts of climate change as main cooperation priorities.

FAO has provided technical and financial support in the country’s fight against various emergencies including Avian Flu, Influenza, Foot and Mouth Disease and more recently Desert Locust.
