Director-General meets Togo Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries

Minister praised FAO’s support revitalizing farming after severe droughts

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva meeting Ouro Koura Agadazi, Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Togo at FAO headquarters

2 December 2013, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Togo Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries,Ouro-Koura Agadazi today.

During the meeting at FAO’s Rome headquarters, Director-General thanked the Minister for the warm welcome received during his recent visit to Togo in November 2013, where he held meetings with the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock and the Minister for Environment and Forest Resources. During his visit to Lomé, Graziano da Silva also held a working session with partners from the private sector in the country.

A cash transfer programme with the World Bank starting in January 2014 which will benefit from technical advice from FAO was one of the issues discussed in today’s meeting. Graziano da Silva recommended linking the cash transfer programme to appropriate food security programmes and showed the Organization’s willingness to send an expert from Brazil through South-South Cooperation, to advise Togo’s government.

FAO Director-General explained that funding from Brazil and Spain will help to support the start-up of a Purchase from Africans for Africa (PAA Africa) programme in Togo, an initiative aimed at promoting food and nutrition security in particular with school feeding and income generation among vulnerable farmers and communities.
