Graziano da Silva meets with the President of Seychelles

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva meeting with the President of Seychelles James Alix Michel. Blue Economy Summit, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

21 January 2014, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with the President of the Republic of Seychelles James Alix Michel during his visit to the Blue Economy Summit held in Abu Dhabi. Both leaders agreed on the importance of the Blue Economy, recognizing that the oceans have a major role to play in humanity’s future.

Amongst other issues, Graziano da Silva and Seychelles President also discussed South-South Cooperation and FAO activities in Seychelles, especially the situation of fish stocks in the Indian Ocean, with a focus on tuna.

Graziano da Silva underlined the importance of Seychelles acting as a model of the Responsible Fisheries for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) programme,  which seeks to strengthen the capacity of SIDS’ fisheries administrations to promote and facilitate responsible fisheries in support of social and economic development.

The Seychelles Minister for Natural Resources and Industry Peter Sinonasked the FAO Director-General for support farmers’ and fisherfolks’ efforts to sell their products to hotels. In that sense, Graziano da Silva underlined the importance of developing local markets and production-to-consumption value chains.

Graziano da Silva said he plans to attend the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States that will be held in September 2014 in Apia, Samoa.

The FAO chief also said that he hopes to welcome Seychelles at the Regional Conference for Africa to be held in Tunisia in March.
