FAO Director-General meets South Sudan Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Tourism, Animal Resources and Fisheries

Minister Deng praises FAO as the country signs as one of the 6 first beneficiaries from the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund

28 March 2014 Tunis, Tunisia - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with South Sudan Minister for Agriculture, Forestry, Tourism, Animal Resources and Fisheries, Beda Machar Deng, on the sidelines of FAO’s 28th Regional Conference for Africa in Tunis.

Minister Deng thanked FAO Director-General for the $2 million which South Sudan will receive from the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund. The Africa-led fund is designed to improve food security across the continent, has become a reality for the first six countries slated to benefit from the initiative.

These countries include the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali, Niger and South Sudan. Each have signed agreements with the FAO in Tunis today.

FAO is and will stay in South Sudan. We will accompany the country and the government until peace and food security are back,” said Graziano da Silva, reiterating FAO’s support to the country.

“Thank you for coming and participating in the regional conference,” he told Minister Deng.

Minister Deng also thanked FAO Director-General for the support with three Technical Cooperation Programmes (TCP).

The Minister commended FAO for its presence and work in the country, which he said goes beyond emergency and touches on resilience.
