27 March 2014 Tunis, Tunisia – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today with Burkina Faso’s ministerial delegation attending the 28th FAO Regional Conference for Africa, which included the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Salif Ouedraogo; the Minister for Animal resources, Tinga Jeremy Ouedraogo; and the Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Mamounata Belem.

Graziano da Silva reiterated FAO’s availability to support Burkina Faso in the preparation of its Country Resilience Priorities (CRP) under the Global Alliance for Resilience Initiative (AGIR). AGIR is an international alliance bringing together governments of the region, regional organizations, their international partners, as well as civil society to help build resilience to the recurrent food and nutrition crises that affect the countries of the Sahel region.

He also congratulated Burkina Faso for introducing a law on the management of plastic waste and the prohibition of non-degradable plastic bags, currently under discussion with the parliament. Inadequate management of plastic bags is one of the biggest health threats for the country’s livestock. The delegation requested FAO’s support to help raise awareness of the issue within the country.

The FAO Director-General requested the Burkina Faso ministers to focus on the field of aquaculture, as he said it is one of the areas where youth can be more easily involved.

The team of ministers reiterated their commitment to the organization and the issues being discussed during the ARC 2014.
