3 April 2014, Bucharest, Romania – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met the European Union Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Cioloş, today on the side-lines of FAO’s 29th Regional Conference for Europe. The conference is a meeting of the Organization’s regional governing body for Europe and Central Asia.

While discussing opportunities for enhanced collaboration in the region, Cioloş expressed full support for the ongoing transformational changes within FAO.

The Commissioner also reiterated support for FAO’s active participation in the Eastern Neighborhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD) projects.

ENPARD is a policy initiative, part of the EU's commitment to inclusive growth and stability in its Neighbourhood, recognising the importance of agriculture in terms of food security, sustainable production and rural employment.

He expressed his  strong support to FAO’s coordinating role and leadership in promoting the International Year of Family Farming, which reinforces FAO’s overall mission in reaching development goals.

The Director-General emphasized that FAO relies on the European Union as a “laboratory of experiences” on family farming that can be shared with the rest of the region.

Commissioner Cioloş noted that the European Commission will continue to support the promotion of FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines for Responsible Governance of Land Tenure.
