Graziano da Silva meets Burundi’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock

28 March 2014, Tunis, Tunisia – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met today with Burundi’s Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Odette Kayitesi, on the sidelines of FAO’s 28th Regional Conference for Africa in Tunis.

Graziano da Silva praised the government of Burundi for setting up a national multi-sector platform to fight malnutrition and for its membership of the SUN (Scaling Up Nutrition) Movement.

The talks also focused on the completion of the Burundi National Aquaculture Development Strategy, which is in line with the goals and objectives of the National Agricultural Strategy 2008-2015.

Minister Kayitesi thanked the Director-General for FAO’s ongoing support for her country, notably in the aquaculture and fisheries sector.

For his part Graziano da Silva emphasized FAO’s readiness to continue assisting the country in reaching its national development goals.

“I wish to see the farmer-field schools established in the country expanding,” Minister Kayitesi said regarding the innovative approach to adult education that FAO and other developmental organizations are promoting to improve land and water management in Africa.

Graziano da Silva briefed the Minister about the upcoming Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN-2), to be held in November 2014 at FAO’s headquarters in Rome.
