9 June 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met Japan’s Vice-Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries , Hisao Harihara, who was in Rome for his first visit to FAO headquarters.

Graziano da Silva expressed appreciation for Japan’s continuous support to FAO. He particularly welcomed the country’s increased interest in international cooperation on agriculture, notably with African countries, following the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) - an initiative to which the FAO Director-General confirmed the Organization’s commitment. Cooperation includes infrastructure such as storage and transportation to manage food loss.

The TICAD V summit meeting focusing on African development co-organized by the Government of Japan, was held in 2013 to implement the Yokohama Declaration 2013 and Yokohama Action Plan 2013–2017, approved last year.

The FAO Director-General also welcomed Japan’s support for the introduction of the global Food Value Chain in developing countries, an initiative which is in line with the agency’s organizational approach. Food Value Chain is a term used to characterize the interconnected and coordinated set of links that take place as products move along between primary production and the consumer.

In line with FAO’s new partnership’s strategy, Vice-Minister Harihara stressed the importance of enhancing cooperation with the private sector.

Graziano da Silva noted that FAO possesses rich expertise and experience in both Asia and Africa, where the Organization works with numerous private sector partners.
