27 June 2014, Malabo, Equatorial Guinea– Talks between FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva and King Letsie III of Lesotho focused on ways African leaders can keep up the momentum in their commitment to eradicate hunger.

During their meeting which took place on the sidelines of the African Union summit, they also discussed the Fome Zero Programme implemented in Brazil. King Letsie praised the programme for containing what he said were key measures - such as cash transfers, and the provision of school meals – aimed at helping a country to develop its agriculture sector and reduce poverty.

The King also briefed the FAO chief on his work as Africa’s “Champion for Nutrition” and expressed his support for the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) which FAO and the World Health Organization are co-organizing in Rome in November 2014.

The FAO Director-General stressed the importance of holding another high-level intergovernmental conference some 22 years after the first one so as to better promote the role nutrition plays in human health while also seeking to boost cross-sectoral coordination to achieve nutrition security.

“Investing in nutrition is investing in the future of our children so that  they will grow healthy,” Graziano da Silva said.
