FAO and the OIC to strengthen cooperation on food security and agricultural information

OIC invites FAO to work with the planned Astana-based Islamic Organization on Food Security

FAO Director-General with the Secretary-General of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC),

29 August 2014, Denpasar (Bali), Indonesia –  FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva and the Secretary-General of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad bin Amin Madani, have agreed to strengthen mutual cooperation during a bilateral meeting at the margins of the 6th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, in Denpasar, Bali.

The OIC Secretary-General stressed how the issue of food security has gained momentum in Muslim countries, including the planned establishment of a Islamic Organization on Food Security in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Iyad bin Amin invited FAO to work closely with this new OIC body.

In a brief outline of FAO’s activities in the framework of its five strategic objectives, Graziano da Silva offered the organization’s technical assistance, specifically in areas of food security, fisheries and food storage.

For his part, Iyad bin Amin Madani also stressed the importance of information on the OIC’s 54 member states contained in the database of FAO’s Agriculture Market Information System (AMIS).AMIS develops and shares standards and knowledge on good practices in information management to support the right to food, sustainable agriculture and rural development.

“I welcome all the efforts that the OIC is undertaking to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition. FAO is ready to increase its existing close cooperation with the organization,” said Graziano da Silva.
