FAO Director-General and Kazakhstan Agriculture Minister discuss food security on sidelines of COAG

A joint Conference on Food Security to be held at the Astana Economic Forum next year

Graziano da Silva today met with Kazakhstan’s Minister for Agriculture

1 October 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General Graziano da Silva today met with Kazakhstan’s Minister for Agriculture, Assylzhan Mamytbekov, on the sidelines of the 24th session of the Committee of Agriculture (COAG) of the Food and Agriculture Organization held in Rome this week.

Da Silva thanked the Minister for his proposal to jointly organize a special Conference on Food Security at the next Astana Economic Forum, to be held in May 2015 and for the invitation to participate in the Forum.

The Minister informed the FAO Director-General about the decision taken by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in 2013 to establish the Islamic Organization for Food Security in Astana and invited FAO to work together with the new institution.

He noted that one of the major goals of the new entity to be headquartered in Astana is to formulate and implement common agricultural policies, including the establishment of a public food management system. This tool will enable countries to mitigate the risk of food price volatility, which is of utmost importance not only for importers, but also for major food producers, such as Kazakhstan.

Both welcomed the rapidly growing technical cooperation between FAO and Kazakhstan and the Minister thanked FAO for providing valuable technical assistance in various fields, particularly in the area of veterinary control and food safety.
