3 October 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva reiterated the Organization’s support to Iraq’s efforts to ensure food security and strengthen its agricultural sector in the current conflict-laden environment, following the presentation of credentials by Iraq’s new Permanent Representative to FAO, yesterday.

An estimated 1.8 million people in Iraq are in critical need of humanitarian aid and food and agriculture support, due to an upsurge of violence in various parts of the country.

"Iraq is Mesopotamia. Agriculture was invented there. It is a very important country in the history of humanity, and has a lot to offer," Ambassador Barzani said in remarks after the presentation.

The Director-General welcomed Iraq’s financing of a new meeting room at FAO headquarters which will serve the needs of the Organization and at the same time reflect the richness of Iraq’s history and culture.
