FAO Director-General and Eritrea's Agriculture Minister

17 November 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Eritrea’s Minister for Agriculture, Arefaine Berhe Ghebremedhin, in Rome to attend the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) taking place this week.

The ICN2 is inclusive inter-governmental meeting on nutrition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

“The food we eat is what makes a person healthy and productive,” the Minister said highlighting the need for balanced diets.

The two main outcome documents of the conference are the Rome Declaration on Nutrition: a political commitment document, and the Framework for Action: a technical guide for implementation.

FAO, closer to the countries

The Minister showed his support to FAO’s reform and leadership, noting that the decentralization efforts have facilitated ‘a better meeting point’ for country leaders to attain assistance from FAO.  “Through the country and regional offices, FAO is now closer to the countries and easier to reach when we need assistance,” the Minister said. “These are the kind of changes that you expect from institutions like FAO,” he added.
