19 November 2014, Rome – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with His Majesty King Letsie III of the Kingdom of Lesotho, who is here in Rome to attend the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) taking place this week.

King Letsie III is the Champion of Nutrition for the African Union (AU), and represents the 54 heads of State who are members of the AU.

The ICN2 is an inclusive inter-governmental meeting on nutrition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The two main outcome documents of the conference are the Rome Declaration on Nutrition: a political commitment document, and the Framework for Action: a technical guide for implementation.

“Many countries in Africa are still confronted with multiple burdens of malnutrition, including the high rates of stunting, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies, existing alongside an increasing rate of overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases”, the King highlighted in his address at the ICN2 opening ceremony.

During his meeting with the Director General, the King expressed his appreciation for FAO’s work in the field and added that he is grateful for the Organization’s dedication to combating challenges faced within agriculture, food security and nutrition on the continent.

FAO – Government of Lesotho cooperation

The Director General applauded the Government of Lesotho for making agriculture one of the highest national priorities. He added that the Organization will continue to provide full support to the continent, especially through FAO’s nutrition division.
