FAO Director-General meets Germany's Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture

“Nutrition is the basis of life” - H.E. Christian Schmidt

20 November 2014, Rome – – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Germany’s Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, His Excellency Christian Schmidt, who is in Rome to attend the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) taking place this week.

The ICN2 is an inclusive inter-governmental meeting on nutrition jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Nutrition was a key topic in the meeting between FAO’s Director General and the Minister, who expressed a strong stance on Nutrition. He emphasized that, “Without caring for sophisticated, healthy and sufficient nutrition, mankind wouldn’t survive.”  The Minister emphasized the vital importance of aligning the newly adopted ICN-2 Framework for Action with the Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals and mentioned the key role that FAO plays in this regard.

The Minister acknowledged that there was limited progress after the first International Conference on Nutrition (ICN) in 1992, but he believes that ICN2 can make a difference.

Graziano da Silva commented that there are higher expectations than ever before regarding nutrition issues. He stressed that now the issues have much more visibility and they have become a greater public issue. The Director General believes ICN2 will elevate the global approach to nutrition, because of the strong emphasis on a multi-stakeholder approach – uniting national governments, civil society, the private sector and parliamentarians in dialogue and joint actions. He added that the leadership of governments in ensuring successful implementation of the new targets iskey.

Global Forum on Agriculture

The Director General praised the Minister for Germany’s strong political commitment to investing in a food secure future. The Minister has invited the Director General to the next Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, taking place under the auspices of the International Green Week in Berlin in January 2015.
