FAO Director-General meets Minister for Agriculture of Azerbaijan

“ICN2 will be recognized as a major achievement in the global nutrition and food security agenda”- says Heydar Asadov

21 November 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Minister for Agriculture of Azerbaijan Heydar Asadov, attending the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) in Rome.

During the meeting, the Minister highly appreciated FAO’s leadership in the “successful conduct” of the ICN2, which, according to Asadov, “will be recognized as a major achievement in the global nutrition and food security agenda”.

The Director-General praised Azerbaijan’s valuable contribution to improving nutrition and food security and the country’s strong focus on agriculture and food security among other priority non-oil sectors, as reflected in the National Concept of Agricultural Development “Vision 2020”. He also thanked the Government of Azerbaijan for pledging USD 10 million in support of partnership programs to be implemented in the country by FAO within the next 5 years.

The Minister mentioned the increasing role of Azerbaijan as an emerging donor and its willingness to become FAO’s resource partner in the years to come. Azerbaijan’s International Development Agency (AIDA) was established in 2001 under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been funding and implementing projects in the Middle East, Africa and Cuba.
