FAO Director-General meets with Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation

28 November 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Adel Tawfek El-Beltagy, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation of Egypt.

Minister Beltagy particularly valued “the longstanding and prolific relation of cooperation between FAO and Egypt”.

The meeting took place in Palermo at the margins of the two-day Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Agriculture organised by the Italian EU Presidency.

The Conference was attended by the Union for the Mediterranean Member’s Countries and several representatives from International and Regional Organisations discussing the role of young generations in developing agriculture and the importance of research and cooperation for a sustainable agriculture.

Minister El-Beltagy acknowledged Da Silva for his presence at the Conference highlighting “the crucial role that FAO plays in the issues under discussion in Palermo”.

Strengthening the cooperation

FAO Director-General and Minister El-Beltagy discussed strengthening cooperation in four specific areas: statistics, risk management, nutrition and the role of cooperatives in the agricultural domain.

Moreover, Minister Beltagy recognised in particular FAO’ expertise in managing deep-water aquifers.

FAO Director-General confirmed FAO’s willingness to continue supporting Egypt’s efforts to further develop agriculture and ensure food security and safety.
