2 December 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Rwanda’s State Minister for Agriculture, Tony Nsanganira, who is in Rome to attend the 150th session of the FAO Council which takes place this week.

“Ensuring food security, reducing malnutrition and decreasing poverty is our goal, keeping in mind the key component of sustainability,” the State Minister said in remarks after the meeting.

The country’s aim, he explained, is to lift 2 million people out of poverty, agriculture being a key element in this strategy.

“We have invested in institutions and infrastructure, irrigation and extension services for people in the rural areas,” he added stressing the importance of reinforcing rural roads to allow food production surplus to access markets.

During their meeting, the Director-General commended Rwanda’s vision in the agriculture sector and looked forward to strengthen relation between Rwanda and FAO.

The State Minister also noted how research is crucial for agricultural development.

FAO, he explained, supports the country in a number of areas providing technical assistance, policy advocacy and land management advice. The Minister in particular mentioned the support Rwanda receives with the Africa Solidarity Trust Fund focusing on Value Chains development, including poultry.

Nsanganira commended FAO’s leadership “on the ground” and Graziano da Silva’s “hands-on initiative”. “I hope this vision will continue,” he said.
