Rome, 30 November 2014 – FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with the Brazilian Minister for Social Development and Fight Against Hunger, Tereza Campello. In a ceremony also held today, she received, on behalf of her government, the FAO Award

“Recognizing outstanding progress in fighting hunger”, in which the country was recognized for having achieved the 1996 World Food Summit (WFS) Goal - that is of reducing by half the absolute number of undernourished people.  The Minister will also head the Brazilian delegation to the 150th FAO Council, to take place next week.

During the meeting, the Minister said the award acknowledges the effort and the commitment of the Brazilian Government with hunger and poverty eradication.

“Brazil was able to increase food production, and more than that, to increase people’s income while ensuring, as an example, children to receive free school meals. This projects reaches now around 43 million children. This shows that we could give an example to other countries, and FAO guides us to share our experience,” she said.

Tereza Campello also praised FAO’s current administration.

“Graziano da Silva has a wide experience, not only as an expert in the fight against hunger in Brazil, where he served as the first Minister for Food Security in President Lula’s Administration, but also in Latin America. He introduced in FAO a vision that the fight against hunger is not only related to improve countries’ economic growth, but also to ensure that their population can have access to food. We are really proud to have him as FAO Director-General,” said the Minister.

FAO Director-General highlighted the progress obtained by Brazil in its social programmes.

“Brazil was able to overcome the problem of generating wealth without distributing it. Today, the emphasis on a growth process that generates distribution led the country to another path. The whole world looks today to Brazil for its public programs and policies implemented in recent years on the issues of food security and nutrition,”said Graziano da Silva.
