Russian Federation confirms its support for FAO’s nutrition-related activities

FAO Director-General and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of ICN2

11 November, 2014, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva met with Gennady Gatilov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

During the meeting, the Director General and the Deputy Minister both emphasized the role of nutrition in human development and the importance of the upcoming Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2), taking place in Rome, 19-21 November.

The Director-General thanked the Russian Government for political and financial support provided for the preparation of this Conference.

The Russian Federation was among the key resource partners, who provided funding of USD 300,000 for organising ICN2.

Russia also contributed to organizing a joint side event with the World Bank on “Transition from Safety Net Programs to Comprehensive Social Protection Systems: Food Security and Nutrition Perspective”.

Gatilov confirmed Russia’s full support to FAO’s activities focused on improving nutrition in the future.

Expansion of bilateral collaboration

The Deputy Minister expressed appreciation of increased collaboration between FAO and the Russian Federation. He also welcomed FAO’s evolving partnership with the BRICS countries. The FAO-BRICS Communication Dialogue on food security and nutrition was organized on 22 October in the lead up to ICN2.

The Deputy Minister reiterated the invitation to the Director-General to visit the Russian Federation in 2015 on the occasion of the opening of FAO Liaison Office in Moscow.
