The African Union commission to partner with FAO at the Financing For Development conference that will take place in Addis Ababa

Continued support to eradicating hunger in Africa by 2025

Graziano da Silva in talks with Rodha Peace

31 January 2015, Addis Ababa - FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva met with Rodha Peace, African Union Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Economy, to discuss the implementation phase of the Malabo Declaration that envisioned eradicating hunger in Africa by 2025.

The Commissioner praised FAO for its engagement in this process and for the guidance and leadership of Graziano da Silva in accompanying the African Union in tackling the challenge ahead.

Peace emphasized the African Union’s call for FAO’s continuing support in the next phase, noting that the Implementation Strategy for the Malabo Declaration was approved and adopted by heads of state during the NEPAD heads of state summit that took place during this session of the African Union summit.

The Commissioner and the Director General agreed that promoting the Declaration and the road map is a necessary step for countries to begin to digest and familiarize themselves with this pledge.

Both also agreed on the need to scale up activities that have been effective at country level, as well as sharing the positive experiences regional authorities have learned through the process.

In addition, Graziano da Silva and Peace agreed to jointly collaborate in organizing a side event on “Agribusiness and financing” on the sidelines of the Financing For Development Conference scheduled to take place in Addis Ababa in June 2015.
