FAO Director-General meets with representatives of the World Farmers Organization

Farmers, critical in preserving the diversity and quality of soils

FAO Director-General Jose Graziano da Silva meeting with World Farmers Organization members.

5 February 2015, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with representatives from the World Farmers Organization, a group of agricultural producers that aims to strengthen farmers' positions within value chains, with a particular focus on smallholder farmers.

The Director-General congratulated the WFO for increasing its membership and regional coverage.

He also praised WFO’s active engagement in the 2014 International Year of Family Farming, and welcomed its support for the International Year of Soils 2015, noting that farmers, as custodians of the environment, are critical in preserving and sustaining the diversity and quality of soils, including through sustainable land management practices.
