Italy and FAO to cooperate on Expo Milano 2015 and migration

FAO Director-General meets the President of Italy

21 April 2015, Rome - FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva today met with Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic of Italy to discuss cooperation between the UN agency and the Italian government.

Graziano da Silva thanked Mattarella for Italy's longstanding support for FAO, both as host country and as a development donor.

President Mattarella acknowledged FAO's substantial contributions in bolstering global food and nutrition security.

Mentioning the upcoming May 1 opening of Expo Milano 2015, Mattarella recognized the UN system's key role in conceptualizing the event. They also discussed options for strengthening their cooperation during the six-month duration of Expo 2015.

The challenges Italy faces in responding to increasing numbers of migrants from across the Mediterranean  was also mentioned.  Mattarella and da Silva touched on possible forms of collaboration between Italy and FAO through this difficult process.
