FAO Director-General with the Minister for Agriculture, Irrigation & Livestock of Afghanistan

4 June 2015, Expo Milan (Italy) – Today FAO Director-General met with Afghanistan’s newly appointed Minister for Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Assadullah Zamir, on the margins of the International Agricultural Forum hosted at the Universal Exhibition EXPO Milan, attended by more than 50 agriculture ministers and delegates from more than 100 countries and international organizations.

Minister Zamir noted FAO’s support in all areas, notably irrigation, agriculture and livestock and requested FAO’s support with policy making, programme formulation and technical assistance.

The International Year of Soils

Da Silva noted Afghanistan’s commitment to sustainable soils management.  “If we don’t have healthy soils we can’t have healthy food,” he said, adding that the UN General Assembly declared 2015 to be the International Year of Soils in order to highlight their importance as the foundation of global agriculture.

The world's soils resources are responsible for 90 percent of food production, provide key nutritional needs and have a critical role both as an engine of biodiversity and as a carbon storage resource.
