Uzbekistan-FAO cooperation to focus on sustainable land management and family farming

9 June 2015, Rome, Italy - FAO Director-General, José Graziano da Silva, and Shuhrat Teshaev, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan, held talks today that focused on improving sustainable land and forest management as well as supporting family farmers.

During the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 39th FAO Conference, the Minister noted that opening of an FAO Representation in Tashkent in June 2014 had become a milestone in FAO-Uzbekistan cooperation and opened excellent opportunities for project delivery and enhanced cooperation.

The Director-General expressed appreciation that Uzbekistan had recently joined four FAO sub-regional and regional projects on locust management, phytosanitary control, adaptation of aquaculture and sustainable land management.

Referring to the ongoing work on the environmental track, Graziano said that FAO is ready to support the Government on Sustainable Land Management in drought-prone and salt-affected agricultural production systems and Sustainable Forest Management in desert, mountain and valley areas.

Graziano also confirmed FAO’sreadiness to support family farming in the country through providing technologies and capacity building. The Minister highlighted Uzbekistan’s interest in FAO’s engagement on the ground to support family farmers in the area of crop diversification and intensification as well as fisheries and aquaculture.
